EastSide Arts Alliance (ESAA) focuses its programs in the Lower San Antonio district, a neighborhood of close to 33,000 residents just east of downtown Oakland. We serve over 10,000 people annually, including residents, students, and artists.
For generations the Lower San Antonio has been home to immigrants from throughout the world, making it the most racially and ethnically diverse neighborhood in Oakland, if not the State of California. It has sizable populations of Asians (35.8%), Chicanos/Latinos (35.0%), and African Americans (18.6%), as well as smaller populations of Whites (6.7%) and Native Americans (1%). Over a dozen languages are spoken by neighborhood residents, including English, Spanish, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Mien, Khmer, Mandarin, Lao, Tagalog, Arabic, and Serbo-Croatian. The Lower San Antonio also has one of the highest concentrations of low-income residents in Oakland, with over 28% of people living below the poverty line. These communities each have rich cultures and traditions, which contribute enormously to the character of the neighborhood. EastSide Arts Alliance uses art as a way to both celebrate the unique elements of these cultures and to bring people together from across communities on common ground. Almost 30% of the population of the San Antonio district are youth ages 5-21.
